Mexico

Cancun is many things to many people. To college students on spring break it is a week long, 24 hour party hot spot. To honeymooners it is the perfect romantic getaway to start a life together. To outdoor sports enthusiasts, Cancun is the perfect place to catch some great waves, go parasailing or dive in the clear blue ocean. And within the last 5 years Cancun has made a commitment to making it a great family friendly destination as well.

From ancient ruins to beautiful beaches, Cancun has something for every visitor. Indeed, it would be hard to design a destination with better natural beauty, archeological riches and man-made attractions. No matter what you are seeking from a vacation, chances are you will find it in Cancun.

The entire Cancun region is a treasure trove of Mayan influence. Stone temples uncovered during the construction of the areas resorts tell a tale dating back to the 12th century. As you move further inland, you find magnificent ancient cities and ceremonial centers of Mayan life. In all, there are more than 200 archeological sites, some are wonderfully restored while others are still surrounded and obscured by the tangled jungle of the region. All 200 sites are within a few hours drive from Cancun. The wonderful archeological treasures of the region have survived and prospered despite the tourism boom of recent decades.

Given the natural beauty of Cancun, it is hard to believe it took so long for it to become a vacation hot spot. The stunning beaches of Cancun simply must be experienced to be believed. Imagine silky smooth, sugar white sand being caressed all day by the warm and inviting emerald and turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

The Mayan Riviera is located along Mexico’s Yucatan coast with nearly 100 miles of beautiful white-sand beaches with brilliant turquoise colored water that stretches from Cancun south to Tulum. Mexicans refer to the Riviera as "Riviera Maya" while foreigners call it the "Mayan Riviera" or "Maya Riviera" this beautiful, mostly undeveloped section of Mexico is home to ancient Mayan ruins and stunning Playa Del Carmen beaches, and it has the Great Mayan Reef, the second largest coral reef in the world, just off its coast.

And although this area remains relatively unpopulated, more and more lavish Mayan Riviera all-inclusive resorts are popping up. Those travelers coming to Mexico for a Mayan Riviera vacation usually focus on the city of Playa del Carmen (also known as Playa) or on the town of Tulum. Here are where most all inclusive hotels and resorts are found, although Playa certainly has more of them than does Tulum.

Playa del Carmen is a mellow city with an authentic Mexican charm, it is growing but is still remarkably unspoiled. Oncce a sleepy fishing-village it has grown into a cosmopolitan town, the largest in the Mayan Riviera, but still small enough to get around on foot. If you're interested in shopping, nightlife and fine dining, this is the place, but the beach is also alluring.

Tulum, nearly at the southern end of the Riviera Maya, is a walled, Mesoamerican town and the site of some of Mexico’s most amazing Mayan ruins. The Tulum Ruins, as they are known, date from 1200 A.D. and are the third most visited Mayan archeological site in Mexico.
